Run 1379 : 16 August 2003

As we left Kuala Lumpur to the run site, looking forward to a good run, we were caught in an irritating, crawling traffic in Kajang town. My buddy, Arnie was dying of thirst and his wife was looking forward to a ‘good long run’. Hmm…..

When we reached the run site, we were surprised to see that the vicinity had been turned into a mini mine which was covered with heavy machinery. Everyone was puzzled as to how the once beautiful run site had been turned into a landfill overnight. Maybe the ‘hares’ have a contract to do dredging and excavating tin ore for future projects.

As the circle was formed, everyone was surprised to find our GM and our Trail Master were missing ‘together’ as usual. Maybe they were bored of the runs and decided to focus their ‘energy’ on other …ahem… more interesting activities.

As the run kicked off at 4.30pm, Alex Yoong and the front runners took off as fast as they could, thinking it would be the usual long run. At the first check, the rest of us managed to catch up with the front runners. The first few checks were pretty easy…..
As run down the hills, we could see our beer wagon and I heard someone utter what a short run it was. It took the front runners less than half an hour to complete the run and they decided to go for another round.

I did a survey and most of the comments I received (especially from the ladies and the short cutters), were that they were happy with the short run but not all were satisfied (including yours truly). From my survey, I was informed that recently Raymond and his buddies went on an invitation anniversary run in Ipoh so maybe they got the inspiration and guidelines for setting short runs. They should have at least camped overnight at the run site to have a good look around the hills, rather than just putting up a last minute after-thought. The circle enjoyed the down down and the last minute charges. Our ex-GM, uncle Louie said a couple of words about the Merdeka Day Run and I’m still wondering if he had spoken in English or French or etc.

After a long hour spent in traffic, one should at least be able to expect a good long run. Many of us spent a longer time in the traffic jam compared to the run. So was our purpose that day mainly to be stuck in the jam or out for a run?

We adjourned to a local Chinese restaurant not far away from the run site and most of us were pretty concerned with our meals which would have consisted of dog meat if we weren’t too careful. The members were happy and the food was great. On on.
