For a change and for reasons that will become obvious later on I will start this scribe report at the circle on-site, before getting to the run itself.
The circle was conducted by the GM ably assisted by his Bomo of the week, Wolfgang Druba. Having welcomed our visitors and guests The GM handed over to the Bomo, who the proceeded to congratulate Dennis V. for coming prepared to the circle, with his new shoes. There then followed an allegation of serious shortcutting, by a small group of hashers, my self included, from the Bomo. But how did the Bomo know about this because he was with us for about 20 minutes, however he did not see fit to join us on the box. There was an appeal for Committee Members for next years Committee particularly amongst our Malaysian members. A number of announcements were made including the brewery trip and also AGM. (If you are intending to go to the brewery tell Nan so that we can advise for catering purposes – I don’t think they should run out of beer)
However having read the above you will now gather why this run report may be missing a little bit about the true trail.
Another hot day with minimal shade found the pack already starting to dehydrate on the open runsite about 3km on the Batu Caves side of Ulu Yam. A fair size pack but missing most of the Australians who were having their barbeque on the surplus funds left over from their run. Pity they could not have supplied more food on the day so that all of us could eaten that day.
ON ON was called on time and started with a jog alongside the road towards Ulu Yam before turning right towards the river. In the old days this use to be a runsite so was surprised that so many people wanted to check back across the road rather than across the river into old running territory. Never mind check was broken relatively easy. Near the river bank. Across the river and then up the hill to a radio tower and the next check. This was broken to the left and down the hill. However a few of us suspected that this had to be a clockwise circle and would therefore necessitate the trail coming up again, were reluctant to loose our height, so carried on along the terraces and even made our way through the secondary jungle. All the time we could hear the pack only a few hundred metres away, and were still anticipating that we had guessed correctly.
However we were wrong and in fact the hares had set an anticlockwise circle a fact that we only accepted after about 1 hours when we made our way back to the riverbank about 2km further upstream with no sign of the paper. We therefore wandered back towards the intrail, across the intrail to find the home trail confirming that it had in deed been an anti-clockwise circle. Arrived in after nearly 1½ hours – (ideas for a future possible run having been formed), and ahead of the pack. Talked to the hares who stated that really they were not the hares and that these were supposed to be Michelle Mason and Colin King. In addition they were quite pleased that they had manage to fool us into thinking that it was a clockwise circle. 1½ hours passsed but the hares were not worried about a 10 weeker as they pointed out the correct hares should be the above mentioned Colin and Michelle, and it would be their responsibility. In fact before the front runner, Dave Settergren was in, in 1 hour 40 minutes, Nick had already SMS to Colin warning him of his upcoming 10 weeker. Straight after Dave there followed 8 or 9 other hashers then a big gap, indicating that a check was not properly filled in or there was missing paper. Last runner was about 1 hour after the FROP.
So what else did I learn about the run from talking to various hashers.
- The middle part of the run had a variety of terrain including palm rubber and orchards
- There were 6 river crossings, which were used by quite a few for cooling down.
- At one point the trail went along a tarmac road (no check) but paper was missing for about 400m. This was confirmed by the GM who saw a Kampong Boy with a large stack of hash paper, even though the hares had torn it nearly all the way through to make it useless for drawing etc. If you are a hare and setting near a Kampong please consider also using chalk or flour (flour is also chicken food though), but tell the Committee so that they can announce it at the start.
- That there were a number of places to short-cut and Terry G managed to lead a large party of our tail end walkers through one of these so that the back of the pack did not include all the usual suspects, Emilia and Soo.
- The middle of the run was very enjoyable but both the start and end had criticism for being very open, not helped by another very hot day.
Even though the circle started a bit late, a short circle enabled us to get back on track and leave for the restaurant in reasonable time. With last people off the run site with Ramlee just after 8:00pm.
ON ON was at Hock Lay where a good spread was provided including the house specialty of Tom Yam Prawns in Coconut.
The accoustics at the restaurant made it hard to hear the circle. With the front runner over 1 hour 30 minutes the run was awarded a toilet seat, and the GM using his discretion as the FROP appeared before 1 hour 45 minutes (probably with the conniving of the hares who will not actually have to set it) decided it will be a 10 weeker. Colin King, Michelle Mason we look forward to your run on 4 June 2005.
The GM also paraded some potential Malaysian, Female, recruits to the committee.
Triple ON was declared at Backyard. I did not attend preferring to have ny own private Triple On with the wife on my balcony.
Considering the hares had agreed to stand in at short notice and not had time for a proper recce due to work and holiday commitment, I believe (having not actually been all the way round) it was a not a bad run. Thank you Nick and David.
ON ON
Venue : Kundang Lake
Hare : Tweedle Dum (Hugh Murray)
Co-Hare : Tweedle Dee (Brian Cossar)

It was another hot day when I arrived at run site with 10 mins to spare. Run directions were good although parking was quite out in the open and next to the Kundang Lake. A few scattered trees provided some respite to the heat. It was a surprisingly motley crowd of about 30-40 which is smaller than usual as some of the members had gone to the Nenasi Hash. The run started a few minutes later to accommodate latecomers.
The initial trial was towards the left alongside the road and thereafter into oil palm. As the Guthrie Corridor was under construcion to the left, I instinctively knew that it was going to be a clockwise unless the hare wanted to take us across the corridor. First check was called after about 15 mins of running and was easily broken when paper was found to the left of the check. Thereafter, there were about 2 to 3 checks (2 being circular checks) that were easily broken by the front runners. The last check was a circular with the paper cleverly hidden at the side ridge of a small valley. It was broken by Nick Morse who felt vindicated that after all these years of running, he was doing something constructive to the running fraternity.
The run was good on gently undulating oil palm and well shaded throughout. There were no steep hills and gullies and was fair game for everyone. The only setback was the whole run was in oil palm with no intermittent rubber nor any other flora. For me, it was nostalgia of sorts as this place was where I had my first hash run in 1990 with my neighbour Philip Lim who introduced me to the hash and as virgin hare with Nah in 1992. Ahhh..... those virginal days...
Lest I digress, let's go back to the run proper. First runner was in at 1 hour 17 minutes with the rest of the pack traliling in thereafter. I believe there were no lost souls.
After the usual bantering and drinks, circle was called quite punctually at about 7.00pm by the guest bomoh. Did not get his name but understand that he is a German who speaks with an American accent and rather quite quickly at that.
The hare/co hare for no apparent reason apart from the fact that they were hare/co hare were called up for on-downs. Thereafter a few otheres were also called and at the end, since this was the Chinese New Year weekendl, all the Chinese hashers were called up and given a rendition of gweilo accented "kong si, kong si-ni" song followed by on-downs. All in, another great day for the hashers.
As I had to go off, Yaso who came back from Singapore with Nigel for the holidays agreed to scribe the dinner.

Co-Hare : Opera Cheong, Richard?

Ed’s Note. The other co-hare was Rachel Chau, but Gary you may call her Richard and he if you like
Ulu Langat was Christina’s previous run site with Wednesday Harriettes. Her run was considered to be too short, by some of the KLH3 clubs so called experts. This certainly was not the case on Saturday. With 4 serious hills and hot and humid weather, it took its toll on the serious and not so serious runners. Uncle Looi was found several times leaning against trees for support as “his back was killing him” advice from the scribe ‘Uncle Looi just stick to either hashing or sex as to do both will certainly kill you in the end’
Huge or “Mother Sheep” didn’t leave the car park as ‘didn’t’ a number of others….perhaps they knew of the perils that lay ahead…
The run set off out the front gate and up the long bitumen road approx 1 ½ kms to the top with a confusing check off to the right. It must have been confusing as it took about 10 mins to break. Around this area our flamboyant GM African Mule and our “never in attendance committee member, cos I’m bonking this new bird in Singapore”, Colin King, went checking to the bottom of a humongous hill only to curse and swear their way back to the top to get back on trail. It was at this point that a number of our fine females did a U turn as it was ‘too tough’ for them, Candy amongst them [as usual]. Having done this run with Mother Hash, several weeks ago, I was aware of the terrain and opted to short cut left up the other road. This road afforded a much easier climb to the peak, Spotted on this road were baskets and boxes of fruit that were obviously meant for the runners later in the run. But they were not utilized for some obscure reason owing to the f-up by the Co-Hare Richard, somehow getting his fine piece of British Engineered Land rover stuck in a drain by the road side and not getting back to collect the fruit ????????????
The run went down the valley behind U.L. and through the fishing ponds. Coming down on to an orchard area surrounded by a high tin fence where a check caused much delay to many. However it must be noted that the front runners who broke the check did not lay paper through to the trail…naughty naughty. The following pack eventually broke the check, with all sorts of methods tried to escape from the enclosure, a number were seen climbing over and a few managed to find a hole under, with the smarter ones taking the way around the end of the fence, through the stream and up the track, through the rubber and up over the hills. Where much devastation has occurred in the name of progress.
[I preferred the trees, thank you very much!!] Back through the rubber and over yet another hill, where Patsy Yap from far behind could be heard squealing loudly at the top of the previous hill, then down through a couple of small streams with the only shiggy on the run, to enter the On On Site by the car park.
First runner back was Colin Hurkis in 1.27mins.
Approximately 160 + runners were in attendance, and they enjoyed the delicious Roast Pig in the car park as fast as Bull Ong could cut it up, all the hash dogs were bulging at the seams with the leftovers. It would be a good idea of Colin King to tie up Hazel the Humping hound in the car park as she has a habit of doing the rounds of the cars and mounting all the other dogs that are correctly tied up and there fore cannot escape her sexual affection / habits, apparently, as the rumors have it “ are all learnt from Colin “
The circle was conducted by our disreputable GM ….Mr Jimmy Legover. Some of our German members were down downed for some good reason. A couple of visitors from Taiwan, a Frog and his cute little Indo Squeeze were deservedly punished for screwing up their flight tickets.
As the On On was in the adjacent restaurant it was only a hop skip and a jump to the tables, although the food was a bit slow in arriving, it was well received by the mob when it did, with Yee Sang as the opening round and the flashing of chopsticks to welcome another year of prosperity, extended work permits, short runs, small hills, low subs, cold beer, bouncing boobs, Free On On’s, more pretty members, clear instructions to runs and On On’s, good times and fun for all.
Some body received a free On On via an Ang Pow Packet that had been left along the trail. Going by the amount of packets that were by the trail, there were a lot of ‘sorry lah, no free on on for you’ as well.
Overall the run was judged a T-shirt and it should have been a medal, for the effort that went into it. When one considers the criterion that goes into judging a run.
Car parking, [Excellent] Run Location, [Very Good] Run Directions,[Good] Quality of the run, [Very Good] as in variety of terrain and length, On On location [Excellent] and quality, [Very Good] quantity [More than enough] and cost of the food, [Very Reasonable] any other effort put in by the hares [e.g. water stops, fruit stops, novelty ideas [e.g. Roast Pig, Ang Pows, Lion Dance, Gifts for the participants. An excellent effort by the hares] This run had it all. The T shirt that was given to Christina was suitably sized for Richard Moss and Robin Cox together….Now that would be something to see………
So what that her co-hare was Opera, if it was a F-up of a run Christina would have to bare the consequences, of choosing him as a co hare. And don’t the rules say you must always have an experienced hare with you if you are a virgin Hare with Petaling Hash.
Let’s just say that the committee is still out on the final decision on the Medal.

It had been unbelievably hot for the past few days in a row. Fortunately, as I turned into Janda Baik and passed through the front of Electrisola, I could feel a breathe of cool fresh air as I wound down the window. And what more to ask for, there was no sun at all !This, to us Malaysians, was a much welcomed day for an outing, what a perfect day for hashing !
We had such a good fun last year for the Australian Day Run. Especially we were to come back to the same run site at this lovely Kebun Rimba which belongs to Datuk Syed, a good friend of Gary Murrell. I had been looking forward to the run today, and had no problem at all when Choo Nai Kwong asked me to switch with him and scribe for today’s run. As my car drove into the compound of this nature’s sanctuary, I felt once again the tremor of excitement, so pleasing of setting foot in this wonderland again. I secretly wished that this place could become our hash Mecca for the yearly pilgrimage !
The paper started from the Equestrian. ON ON was called and the pack started to run through a lovely pine tree trail. Papers led us to the right, where the sign was pointing towards the waterfall. I could feel the much cooler and fresher air and we were now following the trail up to where the waterfall was. At this moment, it was all the way an uphill task. There was a check somewhere and was broken quite effortlessly as it was a simple forward checks. But the goings got tougher from there. It’s a steep uphill and fortunately not so slippery tracks.
By then, I was panting, losing in the momentum. The climb was clearly parallel to the river and one could hear the water gushing down. I think the pack now climbed to a height of several hundreds feet ? Or at least, it felt like it. In the middle of this rain forrest, the view of the surrounding trees was purely magnificent. Luckily not too many visitors had frequented this place, as we could hardly see any rubbish! Good ! Better to keep it that way !
I think it was a 2nd or 3rd check and again a forward check, thus, was broken quite effortlessly. At this point, we were completely exhausted as well as soaked through sweat. It was a beautiful sight with mini waterfall on the right. But, no time to stop, as the paper was now veered towards left and it was downhill all the way. For those of us who stayed overnight in the resort last year, you may recall that we had explored this trail before. So now, with this in mind, there was not much surprises, just all the way down the slope following the existing trail. But then, that shouldn’t take away the exicitement. The surrounding beauty and the easy kampung life, has such therapeutic effect to calm the nerves.
Upon hitting the T-junction after the fish pond, it was clear that home was on the left. But, the hare is now trying to add some spice by putting up a check and bring the pack towards right. Thanks for this as we had the chance to run thru papaya orchard and then into the corn plantation. Shortly after that, we reached the entrance of the Kebun Rimba.
Some complained the run was too short…. Well, it’s a celebration run. So, that’s okay I guess ?!! Plus we were given the bright yellow T-shirt. Good for the ladies, we ‘ve got the spaghetti strap T ! There was or wasn’t a circle at the beer wagon ?…. Didn’t matter, because we were now heading towards the “Peak”. I found the place as fascinating as I remembered from last year- a cleverly carved plateau surrounded by rolling hills. There was the infinity pool and the wooden hut bars. Everyone looked happy and seemed to enjoy themselves. Leaning against the wooden balcony, one could enjoy the bird’s eyes view of the whole surrounding. How many hundred or thousand acres of land ? Hhm… amazing !
With the million dollars view, the most pristine setting, cool, fresh air, cold beers, good Australian red wine and good company, what more can one asked for ? Oh ya ! Food ! As the night fell, I did feel hungry and joined the queue for food. It turned out to be…a surprise ! Just too bad and what a pity. The food was scarce and did not meet the hasher's high gourmet standard afterall. I later on learned that there were about 60 over guests ! That may explain the unexpected. Well, on the bright side, this round had helped the chapter to earn some good revenue from the guest fees !
When you had the high expectation set from last year, you also expected the same for this year- a legitimate assumption! What the heck, we did enjoy ourselves after all…and looking forward to next year’s Australian Day Run ! Aussie Aussie! Oin Oin !
