As I make my way to Penchala for the run, I had mixed thoughts as to coming for the run. On one hand, I was down with bad sinus plus just about everything else you could imagine. On the other hand, I was still riding high on the T-Shirt run I did last week. Still, scribe is scribe, so I decided to continue my drive to the run.
The run took off at 4.30pm with a good feel of well-chosen run site on a sunny day. About 70-80 of us and a golden retriever climbed up an immediate hill and it got steeper half hour into the run. After a couple of checks, we were run by a chaotic loop check further up the hill. This was where Jerry gave a yelp as he twisted his ankle, entangled by some buttress roots at the slope.
Hashers were checking to and fro for some time but no On On call was heard. As Ben and I headed upwards, many hashers passed us by turning back. Paper continued somewhere down the valley towards the right. It was pretty warm day though shady site. After an hour half, we turned backward. This is where we bumped into Sen, the co-hare whereas he ought not to be seen and worse still with his jean and long sleeve shirt. Yup, the site is generally colonized by merciless mozzies. Nevertheless, it was fairly excellent choice of run-site.
After numerously charges and on downs, I headed back. I didn’t attend the on on. As generally concluded, WELL DONE to Laurence & Sen.

Leaving Sungai Buloh around 3.05pm, I was expecting the normal traffic through Rawang, so was keen to get away. To my surprise, I just sailed through Rawang and arrived in Hulu Yam about 4 p.m., which was good, as I did not know this run site. Luckily, I spotted Rambo's truck, by the side of the road and was able to follow him.
As normal on arrival, Don Cheang was there to point me in the right direction, so parked up and shoes on, with plenty of time to spare. Don Cheang advised us before running, that we would be passing on some private land (or something to that effect) and not to pinch any of the fruit (or no scrumping). Then we were off.
The run started up a reasonably gentle slope, and the first check was broken, just as we reached it. Apparently there was a false trail, which caught around ten of the front runners, otherwise it was quickly broken. We continued going up hill, in what was very picturesque surroundings. Then finally dropped down into a open valley, where there was a scene of confusion at the second check. There were calls of “On-On” first to the left and then to the right. So we first went left, then back right, only to be told that the right path, was one big circle. We all trudged off to the left again, along the valley, over a stream, where the paper continued. Then remembered going into some ‘junglely’ parts, with some hilly up and down sections for a while. Kind of totally missed the third check, (as was probably following blindly) but assumed it must have been, at the top of the hill somewhere? The rest of the run was also straightforward, and the forth and fifth checks had been broken, way before I got there. Again, a very picturesque run home, down a valley with fruit trees and the odd fallen durian, to which some of the local runners, were instinctively called.
First runner in at around 5.32pm and even I was back in by 5.50pm, so bit of a short run (approx 6km). However this gave us extra time to enjoy the natural jacuzzi (just behind the beer wagon), which I can assure you, was most invigorating.
The circle started around 7.00 p.m. and went straight into the charges. Quite rightly, the first charge was, for all those who picked up durian along the run, followed by charges for reckless driving, breaking hearts, and new shoes. There was then a charge for Nim Chee, for not been able to operate his 4 wheel drive and in the process caking my car with mud; and nearly me, who was standing behind it. Why I was called for this charge, is a huge injustice, which I'm obviously still sore about.
All the owners of Honda cars, were then charged for ‘losing wing mirrors’, followed by the most serious charge of the decade, being that of ‘attempted murder’. (Something too do with noodles and tuna sandwiches.) There were a couple of announcements for the full moon hash and hash challenge. The circle then ended with a rendition of ‘singing in the rain’, by Don Cheang.
On-on was at the UY Soon Huat Seafood Restaurant and very good value for RM14 per head. (I was well stuffed).
Further charges acknowledged the ‘durian community’, and the ‘Barry's’, with the cry of 'One Barry Drinks, All Barry Drinks'.
The run, although a bit short, was awarded the 'T-shirt'. The picturesque location and spa facilities obviously helped.
Triple on was called 'some where in Bangsar' were 'Davies’ used to be?? Admittedly, I wimped out of this one.
On-On.

Leaving KL at 3:15 a quick decision needed to be made on which way to go as recent weeks Jalan Kuching seems to have been particularly busy. In the end decided to play it very safe and used Bukit Beruntung, Rasa, Batang Kali way. This is considerably longer than the Batu Dam way, but good roads and a lack of traffic still means that it takes less than an hour to get to the site.
By the time we arrive at site the heavy rain on the way has abated to a light drizzle that lasts throughout the run, making a nearly ideal temperature for running but with the negative effect of being very slippery underfoot. A smaller than normal turnout with many regulars incuding the GM missing. After the JM, Tommy, has introduced the guests to the pack the run gets underway back towards the gate before crossing the paddock and through the stream, we are now in Ldanag Batang Kali estate and only about 0.5km from last weeks torchlight run but that is as close we get to that trail. The first check was broken to the right. As we run along the path we are brought to near halt where the clearing of land above the path has dropped fallen trees across the path and for a couple of hundred metres and we scambled around and through the branches.
Somewhere along thios path there was aparently a second check that took the FROPS up to the ridge, but the middle of the pack not being sheep had carried along the path and already found the paper as the check was being called.
The third check was a circular which I arrived at as the FROPS came out of the other end and thus avoided running. It was here that my run on paper finished as I waited for darling wife, as having only just recovered from flu she would not be at all amused by what was in store for the pack on the seconf half of the run. (In fact she would not be amused even if she had not just had flu).
Having been here before I can summarize the second half of the run as
It went Up
And UP
And UP
And UP
And UP
And then it went
Down
DOWN
DOWN
DOWN
Oh and it was slippery!
So while the pack was doing its thing I walked the wife back along the nice flat path back to the cars.
Front runner was finished in 1 hour 27 minutes and there followed a steady stream after that, with many who were not in the racing (FROPS) brigade stopping a couple of hundred metres short of the run site to ease their aches and pains in the Air Panas (Hot springs). The last person did not return until the circle was underway, Andreas but he was known to be in the hot springs so nobody cared!
There were various charges made, including someone (a man) fancying men with hairy chests; Tony Kampen for getting lost between the 16th and 14th floor of his apartment block.
Visitors and guests not attending the ON ON would have been honoured, but there were no takers, funny as most did not attend the ON ON.
ON ON was at Hock Lay, with the usual good food including Tom Yam Prawns in coconut. All for RM12 must have been subsidized by the hare – thanks Gary.
The run was judged a T shirt, which Gary wore as he does not have a hairy chest he felt safe!
ON ON was called at the back yard, but everyone went to Duta Vista for the live music.
ON ON
TORCHLIGHT RUN 2008
Well, well ,well another year has gone by and its that time of the
year again when we pay tribute to last years' GM –his highness, Mother
Sheep.
The venue is our favourite site in Ulu Yam football field ----reputed
for its menacing horse flies......and ugly sheep.
Stomper and I get there early (4ish) to make some "small" adjustments to the mouses’ dick and get on with similarly sinister business with the GM. The usual suspects were already there - Nan, Aileen, Amelia, Nick &
Mary Morse busy working away to the tune of "what's new pussycat?"
blaring from the speakers...when suddenly.....the genny sputters and
coughs to a pityful stop...@#$%% Nick goes " Hugh said there's enough
(petrol) in there to last the whole night!!!!"....is this a sign the
of things to come? Its not even dark yet!
The run starts just after 730pm with 108 happy adults and 5 lil' ones
in tow after a small word of warning from the GM about nasty falsies
on the run.
Being the cautious Sheep he is, Ewe kept emerging from the bushes to
ensure we did not stray from the path...bless you dear...especially
after the pontianak sighting reported last week.
It was a lovely run in the dark dispite the high humidity and heavy
stillness in the air. The FRB were back by what?? An hour? The rest
trickled in over the next 20minutes. BRILLIANT RUN!!!
Dinner started at 10ish with lots of food to keep everyone happy. With
music blaring & spirits high we start with down-downs bestowed by our
GM to Mother sheep and the co-hare.
NOB Marley & the Wankers stormed on stage and entertained us with
their chart topper..."there's a mouse in the kitchen." Now the crowd
is raring to go...next we have Win San's excellent Fuckawee show which
got the crowd falling off their chairs with laughter. Then...Rat Shag,
our mousey mascot reappears with a rather large donger with which
he proceeds to "terrorize" the women folk as a tribute to our dear Hash
Shag who was tonight, unfortunately confined to his camp bed and
feeling rather sorry for himself...never mind, next year dahlink!
Just as we think the acts couldn't get any better, the meastro
himself, Paul Kirkman conjours up an act with 4X Win Choo
look-a-likes for a song and dance routine for our darling Hugh. Ooo...luv the tops, Paul---so this seasons color! The Harriets, not going to be out done, performed the Burka-Monty....well done ladies! The final act saw 20 unsuspecting "women" on stage to perform Robert ( Arnold? ) Palmer's "Addicted to Love" ..poor Mary someone should have warned her. The night died down by 2am after much high energy dancing, nipple tweaking and beer splashing on stage.
Overall FANTABULOSO-guys! Super run! Awesome show! Till next year ON! ON!

In spite of leaving K.L. at 3pm, I arrived at the runsite to see everyone only just taking off. By the time I set off it was already 4.40. Ah well.... Actually I needn't have worried coz when I reached the first check which was up on a slope on the right, the check hadn't been broken yet. In fact it took a good 10mins. before it was. Emannuel passed me and said, "Was it your Run last week? It was bloody good coz in more than a year, it was the first time I was able to keep up with the front-runners as it was not too hilly and it was a runner's run." Well thanks, Emannuel!
The second circular check took even longer (15 mins.) to break. Finally on-on was called down the slope to the left. This was when our darling GM took a fantastic tumble bringing down a few trees with him! We went right down to the river and crossed it where a lot of paper was stapled to a tree. Was this another check or what? People were climbing up the steep slope on the right. This was when Amelia, Charlotte and I decided that, as it was a Rambo-assisted run and the time being 5.20 at that juncture, we ought to turn back. So we did.
Back at the runsite it had started to rain quite heavily. 6.20pm and no sight of any front-runner on paper yet. Abraham trudged in at 6.40ish and said that in spite of checking at a 200m radius from the check (the 4th), he could not find paper. So he turned back. Rambo said that there were 5 checks in all. Pity becoz Rambo would have engineered a super run but something must have gone awry somewhere.....
I hope Don who took a nasty tumble while setting the run has sufficienty recovered .....
Part II - The Cirlce & On On
By Hugh Murray
Having been reminded that I had agreed to write the scribe report for the Circle and On On, this is what I can remember.
The Circle started very late as the pack straggled back to the run site very split up. Their lateness being dependant on when they gave-up the run. Did any one actually come home on paper having completed the run? The GM was one of the last to finish and eventually called the circle to order shortly before 8 o’clock. The main advantage of this late start was that it had stopped raining Amongst the charges were
The hare was immediately iced for keeping the GM away from his wine and pattie and/or failure to control. the weather and or failure to control the co-hares and set a run where the checks could be broken.
Uncle Looi for directing Nick Morss to check in the wrong direction and then not calling him back when the check was broken
New shoes
There were announcements for Bangsar Hash – already history (next one is 29Jul08 in Bukit Tunku), Torchlight on 5 July 2008.
Down Downs for visitors and guests not going to the ON ON.
Before directions were announced the GM promised severe punishment for the person who had stolen his umbrella. Luckily we all escaped except the GM, when it was pointed out to him that it was resting on Ramli’s truck, where it he had placed it.
ON was at the Lucky Light the second time in a couple of weeks, but I am not complaining as I like going there. Six tables had plentiful food, some bribery from the hares, free beer.
A large number of guests and visitors meant plenty of down-downs. Eventually it was the hares turn. Despite the run being totally messed up there was little complaint from the pack and most people had enjoyed themselves so they escaped with a toilet seat and not the ten weaker they were expecting. Triple On was called at the backyard – I don’t know if anyone went.

On that day I was rather pleased with the good weather. Around 2.30 pm while driving on the way to the run site using the old road with Raymond at the wheel s usual.
While stopping at Serendah traffic lights near the BHP petrol station approx. 20 minutes to run site, a black CRV suddenly cut into our lane from the left. What a horrible typical Malaysian driver. When I turned my head, I realized it was Tommy Chin at the wheel grinning sheepishly. As soon as the lights turned green, he sped past and soon out of sight and out of mind.
We reached the site with only 5 minutes to get ready. At 4.30 pm sharp with no sign of GM but Don Cheang giving instructions and directions of paper laid to be followed for all and especially the guests to be on the lookout. Don announced that Alistair would be leaving for Japan soon, those would like jump on him for the last time would have to do so. Don saw me and reminded of my scribe for that day.
I recalled going through oil palm plantations passing through several circulars followed by rubber tree plantations. During this time I was pleasantly greeted by the sight of a long lost hasher and guess who … Virginia. She has been away with Daniel in Dubai and they are back for good.
There was this long narrow trail with barbed wire fencing situated on the left which I have to trudge through endlessly going uphill. Nevertheless, I managed to sail through without too much fuss. By now Patrick Russel and 2 others have caught up. I heard that he just came back from outstation … reason for being late.
After sometime, we came to a large clearing obviously targeting for some development. Some of the hashers were already well ahead of me by the time I struggled to the top. As I was a wee bit tired, I missed the paper trail on the left. By now Isaac, Lee Heard and Cameron (Patrick Russel’s son) were just behind me. All of us continued together including another girl brought by Lee Heard, had just joined us. Instead of the trail, we found some falsies. Isaac and Lee Heard decided to go separate ways to look for paper but to no avail after wasting 25 minutes. We then decided to back-track and soon Lee Heard spotted the paper towards to the right that led to the home trail. What a relief! By the time we reached the site it was already 7.20 pm. I overheard conversation that the Co-mic did not join up the papers properly at certain checks, but thanks to Abraham and Raymond, who joined some of the checks. A point to ponder, why is it that Co-mic on that day did not close all checks? A Chinese looked like a Co-mic with a horn was asked what are the responsibilities of a Co-mic. The answer was: I was asked to carry the horn, that’s all.
On my way to the beer wagon, I saw Daniel bathing with Virginia holding a towel shielding him from the many stares … (That’s Daniel’s style of bathing with car parked half a km away & usually in the dark). With Paul Kirkman as Bomoh, both were given an on down at the circle for bathing in broad daylight and also as returnees. Patrick Russel had to go home as his “BMW” fuel pipe was ruptured. A look alike was called for on down on his behalf.
Alistair was called up for ending his days of bachelorhood. He had a wonderful time holding four SYT (sweet young things) one at a time as a farewell gesture.
As for celebrating his birthday, Sen was given a cold shower on ice by a few beautiful ladies namely Featherlight, Alyvea, Soon Hui and Clancie who enjoyed thoroughly bathing him with soap and water.
Next came Alistair’s birthday which is another round of soapy wash on ice in a sexy pose surrounded by the lovelies. Somebody was calling “get more soap with beer”. Paul Kirkman commented that it is bias against foreigners compared with locals. Foreigners get cakes baked on their heads with flour, eggs, cigarettes and candles whereas locals get a nice scrub down with soap and water by the ladies.
Paul further charged the previous GM Huge Malay (Hugh Murray) & Nan for forgetfulness: a backdrop for the stage during Torchlight Run last year was left with someone. It was Paul who had the courtesy in keeping it all this while. Again, the backdrop had been ‘pushed’ to Paul for safekeeping. It was a convenient way to push away responsibility by ex-GM. Hmm…..
At the On On at Lucky Like Restaurant, Patsy was called and awarded as the first runner on paper who made it to the beer wagon while the others cut across. Hurray !! Jimmy was also called as he was wearing the pink pants where this is how Patsy used to rip off him during the nights … Ha ! Ha !. As usual we have Abraham delivering his theme song “Father Abraham” and got almost everyone in a trance.
I was charged for wearing proper Hash attire: both shirt and shorts with Merdeka Day 49th Run.
A great evening for all.
Paper laid : initially good.
Run length : more than 7 km.
First runner in : 2 hrs or so…
On On : Good food – RM10 with delicious chestnuts.
Verdict : A T-shirt run for the incumbent hare, Choo Nai Kwong.
